This long stocking or toboggan cap is the perfect winter hat to keep or give as a handmade gift. It knits up quickly to keep the cold winter at bay in a range of yarn weights and 18 different sizes that allow it to be easily customized for every head, large or small, man, woman or child! Optional tassel or pom-pom trim may be added for a fun personalized touch. Includes worksheet for determining hat size, gauge, and cast-on number.
Suggested Yarns:
Confection Sport, Targhee Tango Sport, Finn Dandy 3-ply Sport, Stone Soup DK, Kent DK, Better Breakfast DK, Ginny DK, Ghillie Sport, or any DK-to-chunky weight yarn. Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size, drape, and yardage requirement.
Finished Size:
hat will range from 15 to 24 inches finished (above ribbing) to fit heads ranging from 17 to 27 inches; final size is determined by gauge, yarn, and needle choices
Yarn Requirements:
100 to 200 yards of worsted weight yarn; 125 to 250 yards of DK yarn; 80 to 150 yards of chunky weight yarn
Gauge:
3.5 to 5 sts per inch; individual gauge to be calculated on worksheet included. Test swatch should be a firmly-knit fabric
Needles:
16-inch circular needle in the size recommended on the yarn label for body, 16-inch circular needle one size smaller for ribbing (optional), 1 set DPNs in same size as body needle
